It's almost been a week here at Shad and some crazy stuff has happened! After a two night camping trip and a bike ride up in the Okanagan Mountains, it was nice to finally wake up this morning in a warm bed at the residence at the Okanagan campus of UBC.
Pancakes, yoghurt, and apple juice down my stomach, the fifty-two of us headed down to the residence hall for two lectures: one by our program director, Daan, on the analysis step of engineering design, followed by Ross Ladell from Disney's Club Penguin who discussed the excitement of an online community for children 6-12.
Delicious tacos and several nanaimo bars for lunch, we went off for one last lecture by Dr. Mina Hoorfar and two students, who worked at the Advanced Thermal-Fluidic Laboratory, conducting research on hydrogen fuel cells and water quality testing. To complement their lectures, we toured their lab facilities, the highlight of which was the aluminum foam and ridiculously expensive computer with 8 processors and 24 gigs of ram (!!!)
For the afternoon, we rocked some ultimate frisbee and kickball. Then we had tasty pasta and garlic bread mmmmm mmmm (with popsicles for dessert!) Afterwards, we presented our shadspeaks (I didn't volunteer, because I wanted to be picked randomly (that's more exciting). We had all sorts of hilarious and educational presentations from how to ride a horse to why girls date bad guys to the collapse of the cod industry in Newfoundland. Then we came to residence and we played two games of Mafia, one of which was a great success for the civilians and the other which was great for the mafia. No chance of going to sleep anytime soon! If you are reading this and considering applying to Shad, stop considering now and apply because the people and activities here are super cool.
